Based on the reductive transformation abilities of anaerobic microorganism and zero-valent iron (ZVI), the synergistic reductive transformation of p-Chloronitrobenzene (p-ClNB) in a combined ZVI and anaerobic sludge system was studied in the paper. The thermodynamic analysis showed that the synergistic effect in the combined system was enhanced with the increase of temperature from 10�C to 40�C. The apparent activation energy (Ea) of p-ClNB transformation in the ZVI, anaerobic sludge and ZVI-anaerobic sludge systems were 21.8�3.8, 65.6�3.6 and 58.0�6.5 kJ�mol-1, respectively. According to that the Ea of the ZVI-anaerobic sludge system was closed to that of anaerobic sludge system, it's speculated that the p-ClNB transformation by the anaerobic microorganism is the rate-limiting step. Furthermore, the possible pathway of p-ClNB transformation was proposed according to the GC/LC-MS analysis as p-chloronitrobenzene ? p-chloronitrosobenzene ? p-chlorophenylhydroxylamine ? p-chloroaniline ? analine. The synergistic mechanism of the p-ClNB reductive transformation in the combined system was speculated that the evolution of H2 via the ZVI corrosion could be used as electron donors for the anaerobic sludge and therefore accelarate the biological reductive transformation of chlorinated nitrobenzene compounds.
