Ingestion of arsenic may lead to various health problems such as renal and cardiovascular failure and cancer. Arsenic may enter drinking water via weathering of naturally occurring minerals or from anthropogenic sources1. It is important to prevent arsenic from getting into water in the first place, and remove it once contamination has occurred. Previously, we synthesized an iron coordination polymer from iron(III) chloride and fumaric acid. Basic iron fumarate has been shown to be a promising material for the removal of arsenic from water, with a capacity of 60 mg /g. To further improve the capacity of iron fumarate for arsenic, we have synthesized several new materials with varying iron to fumarate ratios. These have been characterized and used to remove arsenic from aqueous solution. Experiments have also been performed to evaluate the applicability of iron fumarate to real world samples, such as industrial waste and polluted bodies of water.
