Despite its importance in Li ion chemistry, solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on graphitic anodes remains the least understood subcomponent. Contributing to the difficulty are its sensitive chemical nature, its heterogeneous morphology, its ad hoc manner of formation and lack of reliable in-situ and quantitative tools to characterize it. In this work, we attempted to probe the live-formation of such interphases in typical non-aqueous electrolytes using an in-situ atomic force microscope. Efforts were made to quantify the interphases formed in various typical electrolytes while linking the topography to the surface chemistry as characterized by ex-situ analytic tools. The effects of commonly-used electrolyte additives on the limitation of SEI growth were also explored.
