Recent advances describing the photoluminescence (PL) properties of metal nanoclusters are presented.  The near infrared emission spectra of Au25(S(CH2)2Ph)18 and Au38(SC12H25)24 were collected and analyzed at temperatures ranging from 4.5 K to 200 K.  The PL spectrum consists of multiple overlapping emission bands, the relative contributions of which were found to be temperature sensitive.  The results of this work reveal a strong increase in total PL as the temperature is increased from 4.5 K to 40 K.  Deconvolution of the spectra into the composite peaks suggests that over this temperature range, there is pronounced redistribution of amplitude, preferentially populating a more efficient emission pathway.  Increasing temperature above 40 K led to a decrease in overall PL.  Analysis of the temperature-dependent emission line width and energy revealed two distinct phonon modes that mediate nanocluster photoluminescence for both the Au25 and Au38 systems.
