Employing nanosecond laser flash photolysis, we have studied the kinetics of fragmentation of radical-cations of several phenyl-substituted alkanes and alcohols produced via activated electron transfer to cyanoaromatic singlet excited states. While the principal mode of fragmentation in the radical-cation of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl ethane is the C-C bond cleavage, the fragmentation of the radical cations of 1,1-diphenyl ethane, diphenyl methane, triphenyl methane, and sveral phenyl-substituted alcohols occurs via deprotonation. In addition to the decay rate constants of these processes in acetonitrile at room temperature, we will report on the activation parameters associated with them.
