Rate constants for the Ni+ assisted aldehyde decomposition have been measured under jet cooled conditions by monitoring the time dependence of Ni+CO fragment production. Initiation energies are far below the C-C and C-H bond activation energies, showing that the Ni cation acts as a catalyst to provide low energy pathways to product formation. The kinetics of two parallel, competitive pathways were directly monitored in this study. The coordinate that initiates with aldehyde C-H activation closes at a cluster internal energy of 17,200 cm-1 and approximates the magnitude of this kinetic barrier. The results of this study are presented here as a model for extension into systems that exhibit two state reactivity.
