Efficient harvesting of solar energy requires the formation of long-lived charge separated states. The existence and nature of these states in ferrocenylsubphthalocyanines has been examined using time-integrated fluorescence techniques and probed on the femtosecond and picosecond timescales using ultrafast pump probe spectroscopy. Through variation of the distance and nature of the linker connecting the subphthalocyanine acceptor and the ferrocene donor, the relationship between long-lived charge transfer states and the identity of the linkers is established.
