Primary amines immobilized onto polymer beads and fibers have been found to have a high affinity for the uranyl carbonate anion from solutions at pH 7 � 8 in the presence of competing ions. Significant levels of sorption from solutions modeled on seawater and uranium mine drainage will be detailed as well as a proposed mechanism for the sorption. The results are promising for the recovery of uranium from seawater as an alternative to terrestrial mining and for the environmental remediation of carbonate-containing water at uranium mines.
