Aberration corrected HAADF-STEM technique was successfully employed to identify the changes of the 2D morphology between unpromoted WS2 and Ni-promoted WS2 (NiWS) catalytically active nano-slabs supported on amorphous silica-alumina (ASA). The presence of the Ni atoms modifies the triangular shape of non-promoted WS2/ASA nano-layers into a more hexagonal one for NiWS/ASA. This observation was rationalized by density functional theory calculations.Moreover, it remains a challenge to reach high sulfidation degree of the tungsten oxide phase in supported WS2 catalysts. Using a molecular approach to heterogeneous catalysis which is inspired by the work of Yermakov and coll., we report the preliminary synthesis and characterizations of an improved hydrotreating catalyst, prepared through the grafting of a molecular mononuclear tungsten complex on amorphous silica-alumina (ASA), which is sulfided since ambient temperature.
