In this study, clofibric acid (CA), a metabolite of lipid regulators, was degraded by UV, O3 and UV/O3 processes. CA was completely removed within 30 min in UV and UV/O3 process, with 14.8% and 68.2% of TOC removal efficiencies after 60 min treatment, respectively. It indicated that CA was easily degraded by UV, but the mineralization was mostly attributed to O3 oxidation. In UV/O3 process, the effects of various operating conditions were examined. Results showed that the degradation efficiency was not significantly affected by the gaseous ozone concentration, but increased with increasing initial pH and decreasing initial CA concentration. GC-MS analysis was employed to identify the intermediate products and a plausible degradation pathway for UV and UV/O3 processes was proposed. The acute toxicity of the effluent increased first and then decreased during the UV/O3 reaction, while it stayed relatively high during the whole UV-only reaction.
