We have developed copper-catalyzed hydrofunctionalization of alkynes as a strategy to build molecular complexity. Catalytic methods for alkyne hydrobromination and hydroalkylation will be presented. The synthetic methods developed are compatible with various functional groups and can be used to prepare compounds in high yield and high stereoselectivity. Preliminary studies on the mechanism of this reaction type show that an alkenyl copper intermediate is intercepted by an electrophile as a key step in the catalytic cycle.
