Secondary organic particles are composed of numerous individual compounds that have distinct properties. One of the properties most relevant to the partitioning of these compounds between the gas and particle phase is volatility. Reactions within the condensed phase can lead to chemical modifications of condensed molecules, thereby altering the effective volatility of the particles. Results will be presented on a series of experiments conducted at the Chemical Dynamics beamline at the Advanced Light Source in which particles of differing chemical origins (e.g. secondary organic aerosol formed from ozonolysis of a-pinene or photooxidation of toluene) are evaporated by heating in a thermodenuder. Variations in the chemical composition of the particles as they evaporate are monitored using a vacuum ultraviolet aerosol mass spectrometer (VUV-AMS). Differences in the behavior of particles of different origin will be discussed. A second set of experimental results examining the dependence of the thermal evaporation behavior on the particle mass loading will also be discussed.
