Bisphenol A based epoxy composites were synthesized with an aliphatic amine hardener and lignin modified through various chemical reactions, including the Mannich reaction. The chemical modifications altered the curing behavior, glass transition temperature and the microstructure of the composites through the formation of lignin aggregates. Dynamic mechanical analysis and fracture testing were performed on the lignin composites, showing similar modulus and yield strength but decreased fracture toughness. Thermogravimetry, limiting oxygen index testing and vertical burn tests were performed and a discussion on flammability is presented.
