High Capacity Anode MaterialsThe periodic table will be used to explore how the choice of anode material affects rate performance, cycle stability, Li-ion insertion/extraction potentials, voltage hysteresis, volumetric and specific capacities, and other critical parameters. Among alloying anodes, silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), and tin (Sn) anodes receive more attention in literature, but other elements such as antimony (Sb), lead (Pb), magnesium (Mg), aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga), phosphorus (P), arsenic (As), bismuth (Bi), and zinc (Zn) will also be discussed. Among substitution type anodes, oxides, nitrides, phosphides and hydrides will be reviewed. Issues in high capacity research, such as volume change, insufficient coulombic efficiency, and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer stability will be elucidated. High Capacity Cathode MaterialsThe discussion of high capacity cathodes will be limited solely to conversion-type active materials. We will discuss cost, volumetric and specific capacities, energy densities, volume changes and rate performance of group 6 and group 7 - based materials, such as sulphur (S) & lithium sulphide (Li2S), selenium (Se) & lithium selenide (Li2Se), tellurium (Te) & lithium telluride (Li2Te), metal fluorides and metal chlorides. Issues, such as volume changes, cathode dissolution, low electronic and ionic conductivities, voltage hysteresis, self-discharge and irreversible structural changes as well as possible routes to mitigate those issues will be discussed.AcknowledgementsSelected aspects of this work were supported by ARO, NASA, AFOSR, KETEP and ARPA-E.
