Persulfates (i.e., peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS)) are relatively new oxidants suggested to be applied in water treatment. Persulfates can produce sulfate radical (E0(SO4�-/SO42-) = +2.5 VNHE), a highly reactive oxidizing species similar to hydroxyl radical (E0(�OH/H2O) = +2.8 VNHE) when they are activated by heat, UV irradiation, or metal catalysts. Many studies have demonstrated the oxidation of organic compounds by the activated persulfate systems. However, few studies reported on the disinfection using persulfates. In this study, we report possible synergistic effects resulting from the combination of persulfates with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the inactivation of E. coli and MS2 phage. Exposure to PMS, PDS or CNT alone did not show any inactivation efficacy on both E. coli and MS2. When 0.1 mM of PMS was combined with 0.1 g/L of CNT, it showed 2 log inactivation of E. coli in 1 h. Compare to E. coli, the combined CNT/persulfates systems showed more pronounced effects on MS2 phage. The combined system (0.1 mM PMS with 0.1 g/L CNT) exhibited 5 log inactivation of MS2 phage in 10 min.
