Novel liquid-like hybrid nanomaterials, referred to as Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs), were synthesized by grafting polymer chains onto silica nanocores. This new class of materials has shown promises for a number of applications, in particular CO2 capture. Owing to their enhanced thermal stability, negligible vapor pressure and chemical and physical tunable nature, NOHMs represent a potential alternative CO2 capture solvent to the commonly used amine-based solutions. Aside from the absorption mechanisms, there are a number of aspects to investigate when considering NOHMs for the CO2 capture and conversion technology, as for instance CO2 diffusivity and viscosity as well as ionic conductivity of the materials, which are linked to the absorption and conversion kinetics. This study was, therefore, conducted to investigate the CO2 diffusivity, viscosity and ionic conductivity of different NOHMs as a function of NOHMs' structural parameters and temperature. Furthermore, a first attempt to model the CO2 diffusion phenomena in different NOHMs was carried out and the predicted trends were in good agreement with the experimental observations.
