Recently, boron-doped porous carbons (BPCs) have been synthesized using 1 atm gaseous CO2 as a carbon source and NaBH4 as a reduction agent of CO2 around 500 oC. After salts and impurities are removed from the BPCs by acid treatments, they are subjected to thermal treatments at temperatures of 750 � 1050 oC. The thermal treatments of BPCs under inert gas environments greatly enhance the activity of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to the significant change from B-C (B4C) to O-B-C (BCO2) on the surface of B-doped porous carbon that was observed in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The insertion of oxygen to B-doped porous carbons (O-B-C) comes from CO2 carbonization using NaBH4 as a reducing agent and it is amplified by the thermal treatments. This work will demonstrate how the chemical incorporation of oxygen into B-C bonds plays a key role in enhancing the ORR activity using experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.
