Increase in nitrate contamination has received an attention in all over the world due to leaching of fertilizer into groundwater and disposal of poorly treated wastewater. To solve the nitrate contamination issues, we developed novel Fe2O3 supported Pd-Cu bimetallic catalysts which can selectively degrade nitrate into nitrogen gas. Two different Fe2O3 (i.e., maghemite (?-Fe2O3) and hematite (a-Fe2O3)) used for Green-support of Pd-Cu bimetallic catalysts, and their characteristics were investigated by various surface analysis (BET, XRD, XPS, TPR, SEM/EDX, TEM). Catalytic nitrate removal by Pd-Cu/maghemite and Pd-Cu/hematite showed much faster degradation kinetics than those by conventional supports (i.e., SiO2, CeO2, and Al2O3). Parametric experiments varying Cu and Pd loadings, H2 flow rate were conducted to improve the nitrogen gas selectivity, resulting in the complete nitrate removal in 90 min with 43 and 73% of nitrogen gas selectivity by Pd-Cu/maghemite and Pd-Cu/hematite, respectively.
