This paper focus on a surface modified with methanol under ultraviolet radiation to enlarge the differences of macerals flotabilities, thus providing a new way and guidance for development of coal maceral separation techniques. The influence of modification on the surface wettability, zeta potential and structures of macerals in Shenfu coal was investigated. The results showed that the ultraviolet modification with methanol is an effective method to magnify the differences in surface properties of macerals. Vitrain and fusain showed the highest wettability and potential differences when the ultraviolet radiation was done for 3 minutes, which can provide facilities to the separation of mecarals by flotation. The change of surface functional groups of coal is the basic reason for the changes of wettability. The wettability of coal mainly be dominated by �OH and �COOH which are the main hydrophilic groups. Methanol modification under ultraviolet radiation mainly effect the content of C-O, C=O and COO- on the surface of Shenfu fusain and vitrain, moreover, the change of the content of C=O and COO- on Shenfu fusain is more distinct than Shenfu vitrain.
