Increasing global populations combined with climate change have placed an ever-increasing stress on freshwater supplies for potable drinking water.  Many cities have reverted to using seawater as their source water, resulting in a large growth of desalination plants around the world.  Tampa, FL is home to the largest desalination plant in the U.S., and serves 2.3 million people.  More desalination plants are planned in the U.S. and other parts of the world.  Desalination technologies include multistage flash (MSF), multi-effect distillation (MED), and membranes (e.g., reverse osmosis).  A concern for desalinated drinking water is the potential formation of brominated and iodinated disinfection by-products (DBPs).  Brominated and iodinated DBPs are much more genotoxic, cytotoxic, and carcinogenic than chlorine-containing DBPs.  Research will be presented on the comprehensive identification of DBPs from these desalination technologies, used in combination with chlorine, chloramines, ozone, chlorine dioxide, and UV disinfection.
