A novel, integrated technology that uses water aeration of volatile disinfection byproducts (DBPs) and treating the stripped gas with a biotrickling filter (BTF) system has shown to be effective. The feasibility of air stripping to reduce trihalomethanes (THMs) from chlorinated water were studied experimentally using process simulation method as well as headspace experiments. The removal efficiency of chloroform was relatively high and the stable elimination capacity of 0.17 g/m3/hr at a loading rate of 0.27 g/m3/hr is promising using co metabolite and the elimination capacity further increased to 0.18 g/m3.h for the addition of surfactant. Anaerobic biodegradation of chloroform in a BTF reactor in the presence of ethanol as a co metabolite to showed up to 60% removal efficiency. The addition of surfactant, Tomadol 25 - 7 as a cosolvent in the nutrient solution fed to the BTF increased the removal efficiency of chloroform to 64%.
