The thermal or photoinduced decomposition of (CF3COO)2IPh alone or in the presence of I2 is introduced as the most convenient and inexpensive method for the in situ generation of the CF3�radical and of CF3I.  The method is applicable to a wide range of alkenes, and is illustrated for the initiation and respectively controlled radical polymerization of vinylidene fluoride.
