Organic derivatives of sulfur hexafluoride have been known for more than 50 years, but only due to recent progress in direct fluorination and chlorine-mediated oxidative fluorination, they have become widely available. Its high dipole moment renders the SF5 group an interesting polar function for the design of liquid crystals for LCD applications. The polarity of the SF5 group can be additionally modified either by ortho-fluorination or by replacing the axial fluorine substituent by more electronegative CF3. Just as SF5 relates to the CF3 group, OSF5 can be considered a structural analogue of the OCF3 group, which is a common element of liquid crystals. The trans-SF4 link can act as a rigid linear bridge within the mesogenic core structure of liquid crystals, extending the repertoire of structural building blocks available to organic chemistry.
