Using the catalyst design strategies of metal-metal cooperativity and metal-ligand cooperativity to achieve redox reactions in catalytic scenarios, our group recently has discovered new base metal catalysts containing Cu and/or Fe for organic transformations such as C-H borylation and Heck-type benzylation of styrenes. Practical limitations of these initial discoveries included the need for catalyst activation by ultraviolet irradiation, limited substrate scopes, and the requirement for neat substrates in some cases. New catalysts designed to overcome these limitations will be presented, along with mechanistic and electronic structure principles that guide the designs. New modes of reactivity and selectivity that have emerged from the shift to base metals from noble metals will be highlighted, including the ability to activate alkyl-halide bonds for C-C coupling in the presence of aryl-halide bonds.
