An oxidative ruthenium(II)-catalyzed C2-arylation method for indoles and pyrroles with boronic acids has been developed. It is high yielding and applicable to a broad range of substrates. Halide functionalities are consumed in traditional cross couplings and similar methods. However, iodide, bromide, chloride and fluoride substituents are tolerated under our reaction conditions opening up the way for further functionalization of the reaction products.Mechanistic investigations point towards a mechanism involving cationic ruthenium species. A range of ruthenacycles were evaluated as potential intermediates in the catalytic cycle.
