Polymer/clay aerogels can be produced via an ecologically benign freeze drying process wherein 100% of solids become product, and the only effluent from the process is water vapor.  We have studied compositions/mechanical properties extensively over the past decade, and now are adding flammability to the property database.  This talk will focus on the fundamentals, including rheology of the solution prior to freeze drying, and on water/clay interactions. Such more fundamental features of the process play an important role in determining what structures and properties are obtained for a given composition.
