High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a major and integral analytical technique that, when coupled to mass spectrometry, has transformed a variety of research areas in the past decade. Unfortunately, the shortfalls inherent in the separations coupled to the mass spectrometer still present considerable barriers to accessing the full information content in complex samples. Further, the implementation of multimodal stationary phases to address these complex separations issues is currently being driven primarily in an Edisonian process.Chiral stationary phases for HPLC were first reported in the early 1980's. The last three decades have seen the commercialization of a large number of different types of chiral stationary phases for and chiral separations, once considered among the most challenging of all separations, are now routine. The talk will consider factors known to be critical to chiral separations and discuss the implications for the separation of polar organic analytes.
