Carbamazepine (CBZ) is often used to treat epilepsy and psychiatric disorders; it resists complete degradation by biological and advanced oxidation processes. In the human body CBZ is primarily oxidised to carbamazepine 10,11-epoxide (CBZ-EP), which is pharmacologically as active as the parent compound. FeIII-TAML, a catalyst modeled after the cytochrome P450 enzymes that are responsible for metabolite oxidation in organisms, has been reported to activate H2O2 resulting in complete degradation of a wide range of pollutants; however, CBZ degradation CBZ by FeIII-TAML/H2O2 has not yet been reported. In this study, FeIII-TAML/H2O2 catalysis was applied to degrade CBZ. Degradation followed second-order kinetics with ~45% removal efficiency. The main degradation product was CBZ-EP.  Other transformation products were identified by multiple stage high resolution mass spectrometry. CBZ resists degradation by Fe-TAML. Furthermore the main daughter product CBZ-EP continues to be pharmacologically active. More work is needed to develop an effective treatment solution for CBZ.
