Water treatment facilities extensively utilize chlorine to disinfectant waters. Recently, the use of chloramines (NHxCly) has been found to be better for this use, relative to its chlorine counterpart, due to chloramines having a longer retention time and less toxic byproducts. However, with Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) becoming increasingly considered for the ultimate treatment of wastewater, it is important to undertand the chemistry of chloramines with AOP radicals, particularly the hydroxyl radical, under all antiipated treatment conditions. In this study we have determined the absolute kinetics over a range of temperatures for hydroxyl radical reaction with monochloramine (NH2Cl) and dichloramine (NHCl2) in aqueous solution. These fast kinetic data show that the presence of these species within an AOP will significantly impact its overall chemistry.
