While many studies on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have focused on the fundamentals of gas storage, separations, sensing, and toxic gas removal, the processing of MOFs into useable end-item forms has not been as thoroughly explored. The processing of MOF powders into pellets, the creation of MOF composites, layer-by-layer growth of thin films, and the enhancement of MOF stability will be discussed here. Cu-BTC and UiO-66 were examined for their compressibility into pellets and the effect on porosity and ultimately filtration performance. Furthermore, we have examined making Cu-BTC and UiO-66-NH2 into composites with ZnO for the broad spectrum removal of toxic gases, and the effect of pressing of these composites into pellets. MOFs also can be grown layer-by-layer on various surfaces including metals, metal-oxides, and silica. The challenges and benefits to growing these materials in such a manner will be discussed. Finally, we will discuss the effect of humidity on various MOFs and the potential of combating this issue via plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of perfluoroalkanes. While many potential uses of MOFs are known, it is important to understand not only various ways to process MOFs, but the limitations of MOFs in real world applications.
