Magnetic anisotropy arises as a consequence of spin-orbit coupling, a relativisitc effect. In many magnets, lanthanides are employed as a source of magnetic anisotropy. The success of lanthanides in permanet magnets is attributed to the combination of their large atomic numbers, therefore larger relativisitic effects, and their tightly held f-orbitals. The small radial extent of the lanthanide f-orbitals leads to correspondingly small ligand field splitting, creating nearly degnerate f-orbitals and large orbital angular momentum contributions. Replacing lanthanides will require a novel approach to creating new magnetic materials. Progress towards magnetic materials will be presented.
