In recent years, heterogeneous mixed-metal systems containing Co have gained increased attention as water oxidation catalysts, but the role of the heterometal has not been fully elucidated. Similarly, the active site of the oxygen-evolving complex in photosystem II contains a heteromultimetallic [Mn4CaOn] site. The synthesis and reactivity of heteromutimetallic cobalt-oxido cluster complexes will be presented. Using a hexapyridyl-trialkoxide ligand, a trinuclear Co complex was used as a platform for the preparation of tetrametallic oxido cluster complexes [MCo3O]n+ where M = Li+, Zn2+, Co2+. Reactivity of such complexes toward oxygen atom transfer reagents and their redox properties will be discussed.
