A more economical and efficient method for the removal of dinitrogen from natural gas is required to unlock nearly one fifth of U.S. methane reserves. It is known that iron(II) tetra-phosphine complexes bind and release dinitrogen in a pressure-dependent manner, but known complexes are insufficiently stable for large-scale use. Tetradentate phosphine macrocycles, a poorly-studied class of chelating ligand, offer the kinetic and thermodynamic stability required to survive the industrial cycling necessary for implementation. The design, synthesis, and interaction with dinitrogen of a tetra-phosphine macrocyclic complex of iron(II) will be discussed.
