Partial replacement of the all carbon fullerene cage to form various heterofullerenes is an attractive yet challenging task. Wudl's method of the first azafullerene preparation employs an open-cage precursor with a keto lactam orifice. Hirshdeveloped another synthesis method of azafullerene and also prepared a number of azafullerene derivatives. We have been working on the chemistry of fullerene-mixed peroxides. We found that hydroxyl amine can be used as an efficient source to introduce a nitrogen atom into the fullerene skeleton through a peroxide-mediated pathway. Here we report the preparation of diazafulleroid C59N2 and efforts to synthesize the diazafullerene C58N2.
