Modern electronics are rapidly becoming smaller and more efficient.  In order to continue this trend, fine control over electron motion at the molecular level is required.  It is well understood how electrons move through bonds within molecules, but much less research is aimed at studying how electrons travel through non-bonded pathways between molecules.  Dominant non-bonded pathways for electron transfer include direct transfer between molecules and supramolecular interactions with other molecules, such as solvent. The structure of mixed valence naphthalene and perylene diimides are of particular interest for these studies.  We aim to use steady-state spectroscopic techniques and electrochemical characterization methods to investigate how supramolecular interactions affect electron transfer.  Preliminary results using naphthalene diimides indicate supramolecular associations can lead to the formation of CT complexes in the systems of interest.  Further research into charge transfer interactions in supramolecular complexes will give us better insight into electronic communication at the molecular level.
