A 3.5 year review of reports of laboratory incidents in the press, as retrieved by Google News searches provide an interesting perspective on laboratory safety. The public's impression of and reaction to laboratory work is based to a large extent upon these stories. They also form the basis for existing knowledge of laboratory students and workers whose behaviors determine the magnitude of this challenge. This paper will review the data and draw some lessons about how the popular press views laboratory incidents.
