Iridium-catalyzed borylation of aromatic C-H bonds, first discovered a decade ago, has been extensively used in organic synthesis for preparation of functionalized arenes and pharmaceutical molecules because it allows conversion of aromatic C-H bonds directly to C-B bonds under mild condition with high turnover numbers and good functional group tolerances. The boryl group of arenes serves as a versatile synthetic precursor and can be converted to various functional groups using well-established organoboron chemistry.Recently, the Bae group used this synthetic method to prepare functionalized aromatic polymers. A variety of polar functional groups could be incorporated to aromatic polymer chains in a controllable way without compromising the integrity of polymer chain length. Synthesis of novel functional polymers based on the iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation and its potential applications in materials science, particularly for fuel cell technology, will be presented.
