Luminescent lanthanide complexes have become important tools for molecular sensing and cellular staining due to unique photophysical properties.[1-3] However a common drawback of such complexes is poor solubility in biological media. Herein, new strategies for the introduction of solubilising moieties (e.g. sulfonate) into the ligand are presented.[4]A new class of highly water soluble and kinetically stable europium complexes has been synthesised and the photophysical properties analysed. Each complex exhibits extremely high quantum yields (up to 30% in H2O), large extinction coefficients (60000 M-1 cm-1) and long luminescence lifetimes (1.1 ms).Due to their high water solubility and photophysical properties,these complexes are ideal for use in bioassays. A very promising example involves the use of such complexes as efficient FRET donors for cyanine dye acceptors to detect ligand binding on the CCK receptor of HEK cells. J.M. Zwier, H. Bazin, L.
