Charge transfer in liquid crystalline (LC) materials has been examined over the past few decades for implementation in organic-based devices, such as light emitting diodes, thin film transistors, and photovoltaics. Yet, very few experiments have used the magnetic, electric field, and temperature dependent self-ordering of LC mesophases to control molecule arrangement and orientation for multi-layer charge transport, whose mechanism is unique from conventional molecular crystal and amorphous solids. We have synthesized new, solution processable LC materials to study charge, energy, and spin transport as a function of molecular orientation and self-assembly. These studies utilize ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy in conjunction with polarized-light microscopy and AFM to correlate molecular orientation with the photophysical properties.
