The use of porous supports for coating zeolite material is increasing for various catalytic applications. These porous supports can be glass, Al2O3, stainless-steel, ceramic foam, cordierite honeycomb and biocarbon derived Si-SiC. Some of these supports especially monolith are quite promising because of their high thermal stability, high resistance towards oxidation, high mechanical strength and chemical inertness. Comparative analysis has revealed that monoliths based reactor as compared to conventional pelleted reactor exhibit very low diffusional limitations in the catalyst particles and much higher catalytic effectiveness. Simulation results have also shown that the monolithic reactor intensifies significantly the methanol conversion efficiency and propylene selectivity, compared with the randomly packed catalyst pellets. The monolithic reactor can achieve propylene selectivity higher than 88% with a methanol conversion of 95% but the randomly packed reactors does 82% with 80%, respectively. For complete methanol conversion, the monolithic catalyst amount has been determined to be many times less than the randomly pellet catalyst in an adiabatic reactor. Moreover, the higher cell density and thinner walls of the monolith exhibited higher methanol conversion and propylene selectivity.
