A novel approach to co-produce value-added carboxylic acids has been developed via a �one-pot� aqueous-phase hydrogen transfer (APHT) process, in which hydrogen in biomass derived molecules is transferred to bicarbonates over supported noble metal nano-catalysts. In mild hydrothermal media, a variety of biomass derived alcohols or polyols have been efficiently converted to the corresponding carboxylic acids, whilst formic acid has been simultaneously produced from the reduction of sodium bicarbonate without using external hydrogen. A catalytic mechanism of APHT using glycerol as the hydrogen donor is proposed. The universality of the APHT may open a venue for the production of value-added carboxylic acids by using biorefinery wastes as the feedstocks to hydrogenate CO2 captured by aqueous amine solvents.
