Iron oxide minerals commonly occur at and near Earth's surface, and they play important roles in biogeochemical cycling of a broad range of chemical species, including metals and organic carbon.  Many iron oxides, such as ferrihydrite, can undergo phase transformations to more stable phases, such as hematite.  These transformations often occur in conjunction with crystal growth via coarsening, aggregation, and oriented aggregation.  Phase transformation and oriented aggregation have been found to be exquisitely sensitive to the presence of organic compounds during aging at elevated temperatures. Techniques such as X-ray and synchrotron diffraction, time-resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and cryogenic TEM can lend important insight into the growth and phase transformation of iron oxides.
