Corrosion by sulfur compounds in crude fractions at high temperature, or sulfidation, represents a challenge for oil refineries. It is generally accepted that active sulfur compounds in oil decompose at high temperature, leading to generation of H2S and corrosion of steel. The current research investigated the generation of H2S by five crude fractions during the heat treatment at 650�F in a closed autoclave. The concentration of H2S, generated in the presence or absence of metal samples, was measured by gas chromatography.It was found that the sulfur content of the crude fraction is not related to the concentration or the total amount of H2S found in the autoclave headspace. However, it was noted that the H2S concentration measured at the end of an experiment without metal samples could be correlated with samples corrosion rates.
