Positron Emission Tomography (PET) utilises molecules labelled with positron emitting radionuclides for imaging biological function. One of the strengths of this technique is the availability of biogenic radionuclides (11C, 13N, 15O; radioactive half-lives 20.4, 10 and 2 mins, respectively) which can be used to label bioorthogonal endogenous and exogenous compounds. The use of carbon-11 labelled carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide has recently beome increasingly used as starting points for labelling PET radiotracers due to the emergence of novel rapid labelling techniques. Equally, nitrogen-13 labelling chemistry is also recieving greater attention as a synthetic radionuclide, with increasingly complex molecules becoming available for in vivo imaging application. Examples of some developments in these areas will be highlighted.
