Halogenated dodecaborates [B12X12]2- (X = F, Cl) have gained importance over the last five years as weakly coordinating dianions. The fluoro derivative [B12F12]2- is available by the reaction of [B12H12]2- with elemental fluorine under mild reaction conditions. A comparison of the physical and chemical properties of [B12F12]2-with its heavier halogen analogs (X = Cl, Br, I) will be given. Advantages and disadvantages for the application as weakly coordinating anion will be discussed.
