The benefits derived from applied fluorine technology touch and impact our lives on a daily basis.  Fluorine plays a prominent role in the modification of biologically active compounds that are found in new medicines, herbicides, and pesticides.  Fluorine is the essential component providing the greatest influence on the physical properties of materials that function as refrigerants, fluoroplastic materials, fluoride glasses, architectural coatings, and fire extinguishing agents to name a few.  Highly fluorinated individual molecules are the core enablers of isotope separation and nuclear power generation, catalysis, lithium ion batteries, and inter-layer dielectric materials for electronics applications.At the foundation of every successful application of fluorine technology one can find a body of ground breaking fundamental fluorine chemistry research.  This talk will highlight examples where fundamental research on noble gas and high oxidation state fluorides has set the foundation for successful implementation of industrial fluorine technology.
