Novel bi- and tetranuclear copper(II) and iron(III) complexes of a highly versatile, carboxylic rich, heptadentate ligand, N,N'-Bis[2-carboxybenzomethyl]-N,N'-Bis[carboxymethyl]-1,3-diaminopropan-2-ol(H5ccdp) have been synthesized as part of our investigation into the their interaction with biologically abundant monosaccharides.  This particular interaction has important implications in a variety of biological systems such as support in membrane systems, cell�cell adhesion, intercellular recognition, signal transduction, fertilization, and as targets of bacterial or viral infections of cells. Complexes K4[Fe4(ccdp)2(o-phth)2(OH)2], Na3[Cu2(ccdp)(�-CO3)]�5H2Oand Na3[Cu2(ccdp)(�-CO3)]�5H2O have been fully characterized using single crystal X-ray and spectroscopic techniques.  The interaction of each complex towards glucose, xylose, mannose and xylitol in aqueous solution under different pH conditionsusing spectroscopic techniqueshas been explored.  The characterizations, mode of sugar binding and the apparent binding constants calculated for each monosaccharide with each complex will be discussed.
