Use of Ru-based catalysts for the large scale olefin metathesis of natural oils with light olefins has been commercialized recently.  As a result, there is a growing interest in the development of a direct synthetic route to the catalyst precursor, [Cl2RuCOD]x, from ruthenium compounds generated during the refining and recycling of platinum group metals. These so-called �refinery salts� are largely ammonium ruthenium (oxide) chloride (ARC) complexes that are produced during the separation of ruthenium from the other platinum group metals during the refining process. Traditionally, [Cl2RuCOD]x is produced through an energy intensive, three-step reduction/oxidation route of the ARCs via ruthenium metal and RuCl3�nH2O. We will describe an efficient synthesis route to the COD complex via (NH4)2RuCl6 without the intermediacy of Ru metal or RuCl3�nH2O.
