Fluorescent proteins from the GFP family are indispensable tools for in vivo imaging and sensing. Similarly to organic dyes, photoinduced redox and proton transfer processes may intertwine with the FP photocycle. Photoinduced oxidation/reduction affecting spectral properties of FPs can be exploited in photoconversions and in designing redox sensors. These processes are also contributing to photobleaching and phototoxicity. Quantum chemistry aspects of photoinduced redox processes will be discussed and illustrated by examples.   Ab initio calculations have helped to gain insight into mechanistic details of oxidative redding, decarboxylation, and phototoxicity of KillerRed. The role of photoinduced proton transfer will also be discussed.
