The objective of this study was to understand the interaction involving citrate and metal ion zinc. Citric acid is of widespread importance in biological system and occurs in small amounts in the majority of living organisms to act as bioactive ligands implicated in the number of biochemical process and physiological functions. Some of those properties are due to the chelating ability and the capacity of citrate anions to form thermodynamically stable complexes. The main groups on citrate anions are carboxylate group which it is a multifunctional ligand that acts with a variety of binding geometries: Monodentate coordination, bidentate coordination either by chelation, or forming a bridge. As consequence, there is a variety possible of complexes containing carboxylate groups ligand. To follow this interaction between the citrate and zinc, Raman and FTIR spectroscopy were employed. FTIR spectroscopy helped to monitor how the asymmetric stretch of the carboxylate groups in citrate is affected with presence of the metal while Raman spectroscopy was employed to study how symmetric stretch of the carboxylate groups in citrate is influenced by the presence of metal. Taken together the data helped to establish the molecular picture explaining the metal-ligand interactions of zinc and citrate.
